Han Kang wins Nobel Prize in literature for ‘intense poetic prose’ confronting human fragility -CNN/style

한강, 인간의 나약함을 직면하는 ‘강렬한 시적 산문’으로 노벨 문학상 수상

 

The 2024 Nobel Prize in literature has been awarded to Han Kang, a South Korean author, for her “intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.” Han, 53, began her career with a group of poems in a South Korean magazine, before making her prose debut in 1995 with a short story collection. She later began writing longer prose works, most notably “The Vegetarian,” one of her first books to be translated into English.

대한민국 작가인 한강이 역사적 트라우마를 직면하고(맞서고) 인간 삶의 나약함을 드러내는 “강렬한 시적 산문”으로 2024 노벨 문학상을 수상했다. 한강(53세)은 한국 잡지에 일련의 시를 기고하며 문단에 등단했으나 이후 1995년 단편 모음집으로 처음으로 산문에도 발을 내디뎠다. 그녀는 이후에 장편 산문작품을 집필하기 시작했으며 단연코 가장 눈에 띄는 작품은 “채식주의자”로 이 책은 영어로 번역된 그녀의 최초의 책 중 하나이다.

The novel, which won the Man Booker International Prize in 2016, charts a young woman’s attempt to live a more “plant-like” existence after suffering macabre nightmares about human cruelty. Han is the first South Korean author to win the literature prize, and just the 18th woman out of the 117 prizes awarded since 1901. The prize, announced in Sweden on Thursday, carries a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor ($1 million).

Much of Han’s work poses the question, voiced by a character in her 2019 novel “Europa,” whose protagonist is wracked by nightmares: “If you were able to live as you desire, what would you do with your life?” The Swedish Academy lauded Han’s work for her “unique awareness of the connections between body and soul, the living and the dead.” Through her “poetic and experimental style,” the Academy said, Han “has become an innovator in contemporary prose.”

Anna-Karin Palm, a member of the Nobel Committee for literature, said readers unfamiliar with Han’s work should begin with “Human Acts,” a 2014 novel reflecting on the 1980 Gwangju Uprising, when more than 100 civilians were killed during pro-democracy demonstrations led by students in the South Korean city. “Human Acts” shows how “the living and the dead are always intertwined and how these kinds of traumas stay in a population for generations,” Palm said at Thursday’s announcement ceremony.

노벨 문학위원회의 멤버인 안나 카린 팜은 한강의 작품이 익숙지 않은 독자들은 1980년 광주 민주화 운동을 배경으로 하는 2014년 소설 “소년이 온다(Human Acts)”로 시작하는 것이 좋다고 말했다. 대한민국의 도신인 광주에서 학생들이 주도한 민주화 운동에서 100명이 넘는 민간인이 희생되었다. “소년이 온다”는 어떻게 “삶과 죽음이 늘 엮여있으며 어떻게 이런 종류의 트라우마가 여러 세대의 사람들에게 남아있는지를” 보여준다고 목요일 발표식에서 팜이 말했다.
