A teenager who has been unhoused for more than a year earned recognition as the valedictorian of his high school’s graduating class. Now, he is using his moment in the spotlight to say it is OK to accept “a guiding hand” when needed. “Despite where you are or the area you are in, even though it might look bad, there are moments where there will be people who will give you a guiding hand,” Elijah Hogan of New Orleans told the local NBC affiliate WDSU in remarks published Wednesday.

“Take that opportunity.” Hogan – whose mother died when he was eight – had spent the previous 18 months living at a center for unhoused youth in New Orleans before graduating from Walter L Cohen high school on 24 May. He sat at the top of the graduating class with a 3.89 grade-point average and was honored as the group’s valedictorian, as WDSU reported.“My main challenge was fitting in,” Hogan said to the station. “There were a lot of obstacles I went through. But I was able to confront them head-on.”

Hogan said among those who helped him stay on track with his academics was the shelter where he lived, Covenant House. According to his case worker, Jarkayla Cobb, staff at the shelter could sense almost immediately that he was a bright student, and for her it was riveting to see Hogan live up to his potential. “I can see him really just enjoying this moment,” Cobb said to WDSU, adding that it brought her to tears to record Hogan’s speech to his graduating class.

“It was all I could ask for.” Hogan – one of at least five residents at his shelter to have graduated – also expressed gratitude for out-of-state family members who have supported him. He said what most satisfied him about his accomplishment is how it provides an example of perseverance to his siblings as well as other young people who are enduring a similar situation.
