Palestinians have condemned a visit to a contested holy site in Jerusalem by a far-right Israeli minister as an "unprecedented provocation". National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who has called for a harder line towards the Palestinians, walked around the site surrounded by police. Competing claims to the compound bitterly divide Israel and the Palestinians.

팔레스타인 주민들은 극우 이스라엘 장관의 분쟁 중인 예루살렘 성지 방문을 “전례 없는 도발,”이라고 강력하게 비난했다. 팔레스타인에 대한 더 강경한 노선(태도)를 촉구해 온 이타마르 벤그비르 국가 안보 장관은 경찰들에 둘러싸여 그 현장을 돌아다녔다. 그 지역에 대한 상충되는 주장은 이스라엘과 팔레스타인을 극심하게 갈라놓았다.

 

Tensions have risen with the advent of Israel's new nationalistic government. Mr Ben-Gvir's visit was his first public act since the government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, was sworn in five days ago. The hilltop site is the most sacred place in Judaism and third holiest in Islam. It is known to Jews as the Temple Mount, site of two Biblical temples, and to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif, the site of Muhammad's ascent to Heaven. The entire compound is considered to be al-Aqsa Mosque by Muslims.

이스라엘 국수주의(민족주의) 새 정부가 들어서면서 갈등이 고조되었다. 벤그비르의 방문은 5일 전에 취임한 베냐민 네타냐후 총리가 이끄는 정부 출범 이후 그의 첫 공개 활동이었다. 언덕 꼭대기에 위치한 이 장소는 유대교에서는 가장 성스러운 곳이며 이스람교에게는 세 번째로 성스러운 곳이다. 이곳을 유대교인은 성서 속 두 성전이 있던 곳으로 성전산이라고 부르고 이슬람교도는 무하마드가 천국으로 승천한 곳으로 하람 알 샤리프라고 부른다. 그 전체 지역을 이슬람교도들은 알아크사 모스크로 소중히 여긴다.

Jews and other non-Muslims are allowed to go the compound but not pray, though Palestinians see visits by Jews as attempts to change the delicate status quo. Mr Ben-Gvir has long said that he wants to bring about a change to the rules to allow Jewish worship at the site.

유대교인들과 다른 비이슬람교도들의 성지의 방문은 허용되지만 기도하는 것은 허용되지 않으며 유대교인들의 방문을 팔레스타인들은 취약한(민감한) 현재의 상황을 바꾸려는 시도로 간주한다. 벤그비르는 오래 전부터 자신은 그 장소에서 유대교인 예배를 허용하는 규칙 변경을 가져오게 하고 싶다고 말했다.

Palestinians had previously warned against allowing Mr Ben-Gvir to visit. A spokesman for the Palestinian militant Islamist group, Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip, called it a "crime" and vowed the site "will remain Palestinian

Tensions with Israel which escalated into violence at the site in May 2021 saw Hamas fire rockets towards Jerusalem, triggering an 11-day conflict with Israel. A visit to the site in 2000 by Israeli right-winger Ariel Sharon, then opposition leader, infuriated Palestinians. Violence which followed escalated into the second Palestinian uprising, or intifada.

그곳에서 이스라엘과의 갈등이 고조되면서 2021년 5월 하마스가 예루살렘을 향한 로켓을 발사했으며 이로 인해 이스라엘과의 11일 간의 전쟁이 촉발되었다. 2000년 당시 야당 지도자인 이스라엘 우익정치인 아리엘 샤론의 성지 방문은 팔레스타인 주민들을 분개하게 만들었다. 뒤이은 폭력사태는 2차 팔레스타인 봉기 혹은 인티파다로 확대되었다.
