A man whose job it is to help preserve Japan's cultural heritage has accidentally smashed his car into the country's oldest toilet at a centuries-old Buddhist temple. The communal loo at Tofukuji in Kyoto dates back to the 15th century and is designated an important cultural asset. Its ancient door was ruined after the employee hit the gas without realising the car was in reverse, police said.

A photo of the aftermath showed splintered pieces of wood strewn across the floor of the building in the former ancient capital, where the toilet was built at the temple in the first half of the Muromachi period (1336-1573). No one was injured and the actual latrines inside remained intact. The unnamed man, who works at the Kyoto Heritage Preservation called police soon after the crash, telling them he had crashed into the temple.

사고 후의 사진에는 부숴진(쪼개진) 나무 파편들이 옛 고대 수도였던 곳의 건물 바닥에 여기저기 흩어져 있었다. 그 화장실은 무로마치 시대 (1336-1573)의 전기에 그 절에 지어졌다. 인명 피해는 없고 내부의 실제 변기들은 파손을 면했다. 교토 유산보존회에서 일하는 이 익명의 남성은 사고 직후 경찰에 전화해 자신이 그 사원을 들이받았다고 알렸다.

He was said to be visiting the temple on business, according to the Sankei Shimbun newspaper. A photo in the newspaper showed what appeared to be the car after it drove into the toilet's 700-year-old wooden door and pillars. Toshio Ishikawa, director of the Tofukuji Research Institute, was "stunned" by the scale of the accident.

“We’d like to restore it before the autumn foliage season, but it will probably take until the new year [to repair it],” he told the Kyoto Shimbun. Another official said that although the damage is repairable, restoring the outhouse to its original state would require "lots of work".

“가을 단풍철 전에 복구하고 싶지만, 내년까지 복원 공사가 이어질 것 같습니다,”라고 교토 신문에 알렸다. 또 다른 임원은 손상 복구가 가능하기는 하지만, 그 옥외 화장실을 원상 복구하는데 “상당히 많은 작업”이 필요하다고 했다.

The unused communal toilet - known as tōsu - was built in the first half of the Muromachi period (1336-1573) and is located inside Tofukuji temple. It's nicknamed the "hyakusecchin", which means 100-person toilet, as it was used by more than 100 trainee monks at the temple practicing religious self-discipline, the newspaper Asahi Shimbun reported.

토스라고 알려진 그 사용하지 않는 공동 화장실은 무로마치 시대의 전기에 지어졌으며 도후쿠지 절에 있다. 그 절에서 종교 수양을 하던 100명이 넘는 수도승들이 그 화장실을 사용했다고 하여 100인 화장실이라는 뜻의 “햐꾸세찡”이라는 별명으로 불린다고 아사히 신문이 보도했다.
