Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, Europe’s longest serving monarch and only reigning queen after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, has marked her jubilee with a series of low-key celebrations in a show of respect for her third cousin. Margrethe, 82, an immensely popular monarch known for her artistic streak as well as her chain-smoking, is said to have made the decision herself.

덴마크의 마르그레테 2세 여왕은 유럽의 최장기 재임 군주이자 엘리자베스 2세 여왕의 서거 이후 유일하게 재임 중인 여왕이다. 그녀는 8촌 엘리자베스 2세에 대한 존경을 표하며 일련의 절제된 축하행사를 하며 그녀의 즉위 50주년 기념했다. 매우 인기있는 군주이며 예술적인 경향과 줄담배로 유명한 마르그레테(82세) 여왕은 자신이 직접 결정을 내렸다고 했다.

She had originally been due to mark the 50th anniversary of her accession to the Danish throne in January, but festivities were considerably scaled back because of the pandemic. Full-blown celebrations had been expected to take place across the country this weekend instead, but were then toned down again after the death of Queen Elizabeth on Thursday.

여왕은 애초에는 1월 덴마크 왕위 등극 50주년을 기념할 예정이었으나 팬데믹으로 인해 축제 행사 규모를 대폭 줄였다. 대신 이번 주말 전국에서 대규모의 축하행사를 개최 할 예정이었으나, 목요일 엘리자베스 여왕의 서거 이후 다시 규모를 줄였다.

 

The palace said that the decision was taken “at the Queen’s own request”, Danish media reported. In a letter of condolence to King Charles III, Margrethe called Queen Elizabeth “a towering figure among the European monarchs and a great inspiration to us all. We shall miss her terribly.” A carriage procession through the streets of Copenhagen, as well as a balcony appearance were cancelled.

“After 50 years on the throne, Queen Margrethe is now the longest-serving living monarch in the world after Queen Elizabeth’s death,” the Danish newspaper Berlingske declared on Friday. Margrethe was crowned queen at the age of 31 on 14 January 1972. At the time of her accession, only 45% of Danes were in favour of the royal family, objecting to the place it held in a modern democracy.

Today it enjoys the support of more than 80% of the population. Margrethe, who was widowed in 2018, is credited with modernising the institution and encouraged the marriage of two of her sons to non-nobility. She is praised for having remained scandal-free and non-political. “I intend to remain in place as long as I live.”

오늘날 덴마큰 왕실은 국민의 80% 이상의 지지를 받고 있다. 2018년에 사별한 마르그레테 여왕은 왕실 제도의 현대화 공로를 인정받고 있으며 두 아들의 일반인과의 결혼에 용기를  주었다. 그녀는 추문이 없고 비정치적 태도를 고수하는 것으로 찬사를 받고 있다. “제가 살아있는 한 제자리에 있을 것입니다.”
