After a weeks-long illegal occupation that ended in a riot, New Zealand’s parliament has a new unwelcome visitor to contend with: cannabis seedlings popping up among its rose gardens. An eagle-eyed Wellingtonian spotted the tiny green leaves emerging from the soil this week and posted his find to social media.

The man wished to remain anonymous, but a parliament groundskeeper confirmed to the national broadcaster, RNZ, that the plants were indeed “a few cannabis seedlings” thought to be left by the protesters. “A lot of seeds had been scattered around, among other things left from the protesters,” the groundskeeper said. A security guard added that it was “probably the first cannabis that has ever been planted on parliament grounds”.

A protester who had returned to the site told RNZ that the protesters were responsible for scattering the seeds and “many more will likely germinate for years to come”. The plants, which are illegal in New Zealand, have since been pulled out and destroyed after the speaker of the house, Trevor Mallard, asked “for the weed to be weeded”.

시위 현장에 돌아온 한 시위자는 RNZ에 시위자들이 그 씨앗이 뿌려지게 한 책임이 있으며 “앞으로 수년 동안 더 많은 씨앗들이 싹틀 것 같아요,”라고 말했다. 뉴질랜드에서 불법인 그 식물을 하원의장 트레버 말라드가 “잡초(대마초, 마리화나)를 뽑아달라”고 요청한 후 뽑혀 죽었다.

The 23-day protest on Wellington’s parliament grounds was nominally about opposition to vaccine mandates, but was blighted by conspiracy theories, death threats, abusive behaviour and a riot that ended in violence and fires. The grounds were left muddied and charred by campers, who also tore up parts of the established gardens to plant herbs, vegetables and, it turns out, cannabis.

웰링턴 국회 구내에서의 23일간 진행된 시위는 명목상으로는 백신 의무화 반대에 관한 것이었으나, 음모론, 살해 위협, 폭력적인 행동 및 결국 폭력과 화재로 끝이 난 폭동으로 엉망이 되었다. 점거 농성자들은 국회 경내를 더럽고 새까맣게 그을려 놓았고, 또한 기존 정원의 일부를 훼손하여 허브와 채소가 뒤덮게 하였는데 이는 대마초로 밝혀졌다.

코로나 백신 의무화 반대 시위자들의 시위 후, 뉴질랜드의 국회 부지에서 대마초가 자라고 있는 것이 목격/발견되었다.

 

Caveat)I guess the title has some puns (play on words) so, here are some pointers for you guys. In this case, parting means some sort of farewell, and as in pot-shot, pot has double meanings. According to the dictionary, pot-shot means a random, indiscriminate, or careless shot or firing and also pot has a meaning of marihuana. Pls keep those in mind.
